The wind-turbine-on-a-car article on the front page has a few people confused about Betz' law and wind turbine aerodynamics. I like Betz' law, I think it's an interesting bit of logical physics that massively increases understanding of wind turbines. So I'm using this space to promote the comment I made.

And to invite you all to read the quite good wiki page on wind turbine aerodynamics.

If you want more, read the hugely interesting crosswind kite power paper from Lloyd, written in 1980. This single paper spawned a huge research effort. About 40 teams are developing crosswind kite power systems, all based on this single paper. And better yet, it's understandable if you've read the wind turbine aero wiki page. Also, this paper proposes a modified C5 Galaxy to be used as a power generating kite.

Well said but probably way above people's heads who actually are saying anything otherwise.

I'm guessing you'll tell me that a car powered by a water turbine won't work either? Come ON mate, it's easy.. Put a tank on the roof, fill that with water, let the water power the turbine, that turbine drives the wheels and a the wheels not only moves the car, but they also power a pump that pumps the water back into the tank. We all know that the only reason we don't have free power is because the oil companys pays Obama to keep things secret.

Oh, physicists. First assume a spherical cow, and all that. One word that complicates matters horribly in the real world: cross-winda.

Thanks for the additional explanation... when I first saw the comment, I thought it was referring to energy generation vs. drag forces.
